Catalogue by LYMAN H. LOW.
AT THE COLLECTORS’ CLUB,
351 FOURTH AVENUE, NEW YORK CITY.
TERMS USED TO DEFINE THE VARIOUS PARTS OF A COIN.
The front or face of a coin bearing the principal device, is called the
obverse. Obv.
The back is called the reverse. Rev.
The principal device or object represented on a coin is called the
type.
The area or space between the type and the circumference is called
the field.
The lower portion of the area of a coin beneath the type, and separated
from the rest of the field by a horizontal line, is called the exergue. Ex.
The line itself is sometimes called the socle.
Small objects represented either in the field or the exergue, as ad-
juncts to the main type, are called symbols.
Portions of a coin which are sunk below the level of the surface are
said to be incuse.
The words surrounding the device form the legend ; if arranged to
read in lines across a coin or medal, they are called the inscription.
inPOSITIONS.
Counterfeits are of three classes: (i) Struck copies from dies imi-
tating the original. (2) Electrotypes. (3) Casts (the moulding process).
An altered date on a piece, otherwise genuine, may properly be also
classed with the preceding.
Restrikes are impressions from the original dies, but struck subse-
quently; and although from such original dies, should not be classed
with original issues: in certain well-known cases, they have been fur-
tively put on the market, to the detriment of owners of rare originals,
and with a willful disregard of their rights, which might almost be called
robbery, since the owners, even if conscious, are helpless. Restrikes
are close relations to the foregoing class, and should not be encouraged.
Medals struck at the Paris mint since 1842 have the name of the
metal inscribed on the edge, often with a symbol by which the date of
restrike can be approximately known. Therefore issues subsequent to
that date are easily determined, whether original or modern.

THE PROPERTY OF MR. JOHN G. MILLS.
ENGLISH TOKENS OF THE 18th CENTURY.
An unusual Collection, and valuable ; mostly in tiie choicest preserva-
tion. The foundation, made many years ago, was largely
AUGMENTED BY SELECTIONS FROM THE

England, in 1798 and 1799. The bracketed figures refer to page, the others to the
particular numbers on the page. w. e. denotes wrong edge ; (2, 1 w. e.) means 2
pieces, one of which has a wrong or differing edge.

Just a word as to value; I copy from the Scott Stamp & Coin Co.’s auction

“ For the information of collectors as to the commercial value of these tokens,
we will state that we have kept a careful record of the prices asked for them by
reputable dealers in London, and elsewhere in Great Britain. Few are marked
as low as 8 shillings ($2.00), while many are rated from 12 to 18 shillings. We
have had several transactions for the obtaining of single specimens of either
Penny, Halfpenny or Farthing, where the price has been from £\ to £2. We
quote from an invoice of 1892, 9 at 15 sh., 9 at 16 sh., 4 at 17 . . 6, 4 at £1 .. 1,
3 at ;£i . . 5 and 3 at £1 . . 10, making 32 pieces, averaging $4.50 each.”
